Captain Toad

Captain Toad (Captain Kinopio in Japan) is arguably one of the most popular of the Toad characters and is best known for his starring role in the Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (known as Susume!Kinopio Taichou in Japan) game which recently saw re-releases on both Nintendo Switch and 3DS. Captain Toad’s first appearance however was in the 2007 Wii game Super Mario Galaxy and its sequel three years later where he is known as the Toad Brigade Captain in offering help to Mario. Captain Toad’s first playable role was in Super Mario 3D World for Wii U in 2013.

Super Mario 3D World introduced several The Adventures of Captain Toad levels which formed the basis of the gameplay found in the following year’s Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker release, with more of an emphasis on puzzles than the typical platforming found in traditional Super Mario series titles. Captain Toad -in his first and only lead appearance- has the ability to pluck vegetables similarly to Toad’s first playable role in Super Mario Bros. 2, although unlike Toad, he is unable to jump due to the heavy backpack he is wearing.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker’s recent port has managed to sell over one million copies, out-selling the Wii U original. Downloadable content is now available on the Nintendo Switch version, with many co-op stages alongside Captain Toadette also recently added. Captain Toad’s other appearances include as a trophy in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, returning to giving Mario advice in Super Mario Odyssey for Nintendo Switch, and as both a cameo and spirit in the recent release of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, again for Switch.

It’s unknown what role Captain Toad will take in Nintendo’s future plans, although it’s hard to believe that a Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker 2 will not at some point be made due to both the commercial and critical acclaim the first game has achieved. Whether he becomes a staple part of the series that Toad is already a part of (Mario Kart, Mario Tennis, Mario Golf etc) -even if just an alternate costume- remains to be seen, but we’ll be ready to update this page the moment there is more Captain Toad appearances!

    1. Thanks for the kind words! Obscure Toads will likely come in year two! Already thinking of adding in Toad’s enemies to keep the blog active in a third year!
