Toadette -or Kinopico as she’s known in Japan- is Toad’s female counterpart. She first appeared alongside Toad as an unlockable character-set in the 2003 Nintendo GameCube racer Mario Kart: Double Dash!! obtained by winning the Special Cup at 100cc. Although she didn’t appear in the Nintendo DS or 3DS versions of Mario Kart; Toadette returned as an unlockable character in Mario Kart Wii (by competing in all 32 Time Trials), and more recently as an unlockable in Mario Kart 8 for Wii U (and from the start in the Nintendo Switch version, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe).

After her Double Dash debut, Toadette also appeared in the GameCube games Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (Paper Mario RPG in Japan) as an NPC (non-playable character), in Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix (Dance Dance Revolution with Mario in Japan) as an NPC, in Mario Superstar Baseball (Super Mario Stadium Miracle Baseball in Japan) as an unlockable playable character, and in Mario Party 6 as an unlockable playable character. Toadette has starred in every subsequent Mario Party title, where she sometimes assumes hosting duties alongside Toad.

Toadette has now starred in over 30 Nintendo titles including playable roles in the sporting games Mario Golf: World Tour for Nintendo 3DS, Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash for Wii U, and Mario Tennis Aces for Nintendo Switch. More recently she is one of the playable starter characters in New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe for Nintendo Switch and as an unlockable character in the mobile game Super Mario Run. It’s perhaps in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker -where she stars as Captain Toadette alongside Captain Toad- where she is most fondly regarded.

Toad and Toadette are sometimes referred to as siblings yet other times as friends. Whilst the two are shown holding hands during the ending credits of Mario Kart Wii, they are thought not to be romantically involved. Toadette is similar to Toad in both her appearance and characteristics, and is often portrayed as having lighter and speedy abilities in several of the games she appears in. She is regarded as being a cute character with a kind personality, sharing similar enemies (Bowser, Kamek, and Wingo) as her male counterpart.
