Toadsworth -or Kinojii as he’s known in Japan- is an elderly Toad, although it isn’t until 2002 that he makes his first appearance in the Nintendo GameCube classic Super Mario Sunshine. Toadsworth, alongside Mario, Princess Peach, and five Toads go on vacation to Isle Delfino. Things don’t go quite as planned, and it doesn’t take long for the villainous Shadow Mario to appear in his attempt to scupper the holiday makers’ plans. Toadsworth is a reoccurring NPC (non-playable character) as the story unfolds.

Over the course of the decade, Toadsworth appeared in 20 Nintendo titles, and even was playable in the Japan-only Nintendo DS mahjong game Yakuman DS. Toadsworth is the first ranked and most difficult opponent. Beat him, and you get to unlock him! The elderly Toad is also playable in the GameCube game Mario Superstar Baseball (Super Mario Stadium Miracle Baseball in Japan) and its Wii sequel Mario Super Sluggers (Super Mario Stadium Family Baseball) where he has great technique but lacks stamina.

Toadsworth’s appearances have slowed down over the past few years, although he makes regular NPC appearances in the Mario & Luigi series of games, most recently in Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story + Bowser Jr.’s Journey (Mario & Luigi RPG3 DX in Japan) for Nintendo 3DS. His only other appearances over the past few years were a cameo in Mario Party: The Top 100, again for Nintendo 3DS, as a trophy in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, and most-recently as a spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for Nintendo Switch.

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time (Mario & Luigi RPG 2×2 in Japan) sees the only appearance of Toadsworth the Younger -or Kakono Kinojii as he’s known in Japan- who is the younger version of the elder Toadsworth, with the two side-by-side due to the time traveling storyline of the game. Throughout his life, Toadsworth has kept a close relationship with Princess Peach, helping take care of her since she was Baby Peach, although it is unknown whether the two characters are actually related.
