Blue Toad

Blue Toad

Blue Toad -or Ao Kinopio as he’s known in Japan- first became a playable character in the 2009 Wii game New Super Mario Bros. Wii and joined Mario, Luigi, and Yellow Toad as selectable characters. The four protagonists are all celebrating Princess Peach’s birthday until Bowser and the Koopalings pop out of a huge cake to first surprise, then kidnap, the Princess. Blue Toad, and the rest of the party, must conquer the Koopalings before descending into Bowser’s Castle in order to defeat King Bowser and ultimately rescue Princess Peach!

Blue Toad makes his return as a playable character three years later in New Super Mario Bros. U where he once again joins Mario, Luigi, and Yellow Toad (along with Miis in Coin Battle, Boost Rush, and Challenge Mode). The four heroes also star in the following year’s New Super Luigi U. The new power up here is the Super Acorn, where Blue Toad becomes Flying Squirrel Blue Toad. This is in addition to the previous Wii title’s Propeller Mushroom and Penguin Suit where Blue Toad became Propeller Blue Toad and Blue Penguin Toad respectively.

Other appearances include hosting duties in Mario Party 9 for Wii and Mario Party 10 for Wii U, plus numerous cameos in Mario Party: Island Tour for Nintendo 3DS and Super Mario Party for Nintendo Switch. A Blue Toad is also one of the playable characters in Super Mario 3D World for Wii U, although he is referred to in-game as just Toad (albeit with Blue spots instead of Red). Due to the graphical limitations on the Nintendo Entertainment System’s Super Mario Bros. 2, Toad is again depicted with Blue spots, although is not considered to be Blue Toad.

A Blue Toad -known as Hint Toad– has also starred in several Nintendo titles, including in Super Mario Galaxy‘s 1 and 2 for Nintendo GameCube, and more recently in Super Mario Odyssey and the Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker games where, as a member of the Toad Brigade, gives advice to Mario throughout his adventures. Comparable to Mario in his platforming abilities, Blue Toad is regarded as one of the braver Toad characters. He retains all the positive attributes found in the Toad species, making him an all-round fun guy to be around!
